Full Screen Map This summit is typical Northumbrian moorland, complete with pools of water. Report 1 NT894280 - Large parking area at the end of the public road at Hethpool. Do not park on the grass verge. The car park is just behind the trees on the left as you approach. This route may not suit everyone, but it afforded a common parking spot with Great Hetha. It is a steep awkward climb up from Hethpool and you might like to consider doing it from another direction. The first part of the walk is easy. Go along St Cuthbert’s Way in a north-easterly direction. After about a kilometre, at NT905284, take a narrow track through a gate onto the Access land. This follows the stream uphill through waist-high bracken until it reaches the sheepfold shown on the OS map. From here, the ascent is a hard slog up the spine of the hill towards Wester Tor, through the bracken and over heather, coarse grasses and bilberry. There is a trig point at the 537m peak of the hill, but the AZ is large and it may be more convenient to operate lower down. |
