Full Screen Map The summit boasts two trig points about 100m apart. GPS recorded the modern white trig pillar at SE 88661 99210 and the old concrete one at SE 88575 99218. Close to the white trig is a burial mound called Louven Howe. This is the highest point and marked by an old standing stone. A heather grouse moor surrounds all these features. Adders can be seen on warm days. They are timid but not harmless. An alternative operating point is Lilla Cross 600m SSE. Report 1 SE 8582 9829 - Eller Beck Bridge where the Lyke Wake Walk path crosses the A169 An alternative option is to follow the Lyke Wake Walk path going east from Eller Beck Bridge on the A169 at SE 8582 9829. Close by there is parking space used by LWW support vehicles. Cross MOD land on a good path passing a sheepfold at SE 8696 9848. Follow the path via SE 8785 9858 keeping Eller Beck on your left and turn left at the gate (SE 88627 98637). Stony Leas is now 700m north along the track. Ascent: 130m Distance 2 x 3.9 km. Report 2 SE 8936 9675 - Park clear of and on south side of gate. WARNING: Follow the route option below only if you are happy about driving on forest tracks otherwise cycle the whole route from Langdale End to Stony Leas or use the above route from Eller Beck on the A169. |
