Full Screen Map A fairly large, grassy summit with a bridleway traversing the top. There is a communications mast that cause me problems on HF, and some handy trees for shade (it was 28C when I did it). Report 1 SK311973 - Only room for a couple of cars but there is more parking in the woodlands just south of the summit. From the parking place head (south) up the main road a few hundred metres to pick up a bridleway on the right. This goes almost to the summit and then goes down the other side of the hill. I think the summit is a managed nature reserve and although there are a few tracks I hid under a tree. This was firstly to keep out of the sun and secondly not to draw any unwanted attention. Car to summit about 10 - 15 min. Report 2 SK 32455 95068 - Room for over 30 cars in Wharncliffe Forest Car park. At weekends this is popular forest with cyclists and dog walkers and the car park fills up quickly. On my return at about 11:30 the car park was overflowing on to the road. From the car park follow the well maintained gravel track keeping to the right at the two junctions until SK 31138 95099 and then leave the track and go over the stile (your are now on access land,no more dog walkers and cyclists). At this point you have two options: a clear path veering to the left or a very faint path to the right, which ever taken you will reach a very clear track after about 200m. |
